A Tricky Steep Sloping Garden
The Garden Design Brief:
Before we started work there was an ugly concrete parking area at the bottom of a very steep garden. This created disconnect between the parking and the house. It was essential that the design linked the parking area up the steep slope to the house. We were commissioned to design and build the project as a local garden landscaping business in Bath.
The Landscaping Design:
The owners wanted to create variety in the garden so when we were discussing the design we agreed on 2 different styles of steps through 2 individual flower beds and then planted each bed with its own distinct style. The plants that we selected were key in getting the feel that the owners wanted for the garden.
A Stepped Pathway Carefully Crafted:
We raised the lower side of the top bed using green oak sleepers and created a gentle stepped path of gravel and wood running through the planting. We used a variety of gorgeous prairie style plants – lots of grasses – combined with perennials to give a soft planting style with all year round interest. Solar post lights were placed along the path to give soft ambient lighting at night.
For the lower bed we created another set of steps, this time from railway sleepers and masonry, which linked to the parking area. To soften the look we planted with wildflowers and clad the existing retaining wall in cedar slats. To finish off we paved the parking area in warm toned paviors.
Through beautifully planted borders.
The overall feel of the garden is now of effortless style. We have created a route from the parking to the house through beautifully planted borders that will change through the seasons.
